2014 Final Thoughts Contest Winner

“Hoboken”
by Lena Keown

let’s be like adults for the weekend
and wake up together at eleven,
because we’ve battled the week
and conquered,
and lie close under thick blankets
as looming winter chills concrete walls
and a mattress that’s too small for two
while we laugh at words we won’t remember,
and your fingers dance idly across my breast.

let’s be like adults for the weekend
and complain of how tired we are, still,
and burn our tongues on bitter coffee
as we gaze out the window in quiet reverence,
as though the city offers some sort of knowledge,
a profoundness we can’t yet grasp:
so we’ll talk, instead, of the people we’ve known
and dream of the future behind hushed lips,
hoping that it will always be like this.
